Last weekend i shot a little video, and setup a tiny little website for street kids in India WeekendSmile.org, this thrive on an extremely simple idea of giving street kid a print copy of their photograph so that they can have a memory of their lifetime, since most of then dont have a picture of their childhood when they grow up!

I have done it couple of times, and kids love it!

The idea is to now build a strong community of photographers which will help widen the scope of this concept! So, join me in propagating weekendsmile.org and help spread smiles :)

I remember, in 2009, it used to take almost 40 minutes to 1 hour to cross just mere a 5 KM stretch between Lower Parel to Bandra.

And then, Sea Link Happened ... It all has changed now... apart from being beautifully built, it is a blessing on daily commuters who go to town frequently.

p.s. no bikes allowed, thats one thing i miss... its insane, absolutely!

The Taj Mahal Trip!

Irony, I lived in delhi for 3 years, but never visited Taj Mahal which is just 4 hours journey from delhi. Thanks to my recent Delhi trip, though it was just for 3 days, we manage to make a quick program to make a new post of my blog.

This was at 7.00 AM in the morning, and there was hustle bustle at this time in the morning.

If you are planning a visit, you should go early in the morning, else holidays gets you a very long queue which takes more than 2hours to get through.

And I love the morning sunshine light on these historic walls.

What amazed me at the place is the peaceful feeling which you get with the White Marble all around you.

And you'll feel that you've just spent one of your best time there. :)

Trek to Kalsubai, climbing the highest mountain of Maharashtra!

So, how does it feel to climb the highest mountain of Maharashtra?

Well, the feeling which i get is that

'I've done it .. :)'

Your achievement comes with the package of a great view of entire 360 degrees of Maharashtra at an altitude of 5400 ft above sea level, as far as you can see, nothing comes in between of your view.

But, the trek is quite challenging, if you are a novice, be well prepared ... equip yourself with enough food (3 Meals), Minimum 3 liters of water, Medicines, e.g., crocin of maftal forte for fever / lomotil for loose motion / saridon for headeache etc.) / Carry few packets of Electrol to avoid dehydration.

This achievement also come with great feel of a village life, experiencing its simplicity and a thought in your head that even bare minimum necessities are enough to lead a good life.

And if you are wise, you will start your trek early in the morning clicking great pictures.

You will be guaranteed to have a golden view of the valley.

And a refreshing picture of yourself .. ;)

Winter is a good time to trek, you will see a sky so blue, and no jig jag of rain drops.

Thanks to my friend Samiir Halady, who has made this happen, (and have been chasing me to come to a trek from almost a year now). Samiir runs a group called V Hikerz of Trekking, which is one of the most active trekking group of Mumbai. His story of forming this group is quite compelling as he was left out of a trekking group after they found he is on dialysis, and the man formed a group which is one of the most active in Mumbai. The entry to the group is by reference, if you feel like joining, pls send a mail to Samiir at samiirh at gmail.com

Few rules V Hiker follows;

1. No litter

2. No unnecessary sloganeering

3. We believe treks are for not for pure physical exertion but also to enjoy the beauty of nature.

And forgot to mention, the group was a bunch of the most helpful people I came across ... group shared their food with each other, there was this guy called 'Shyam' who gave his shoes to samiir and walked barefoot for last kilometer of the trek, and he was the one who gave me also a hood to cover my head.

Kudos to the group.

About Kanheri Caves

The Kanheri Caves are a group of rock-cut monuments, located north of Borivali on the western outskirts of Mumbai, India, deep within the green forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is 6 km from the National Park Main Gate & 7 km from Borivali Station. Tourists can go in after 7.30 a.m. Kanheri Caves are signs of Buddhist influence on art and culture in India. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit word Krishnagiri generally meaning black in colour.^[1] They were chiseled out of a massive basaltic rock outcropping.^[2]

This came to my utmost surprise when my office shifted near Seepz, the early morning fun ride to my office through an Inside road of Aarey Milk Coloney in Mumbai. Honestly, I wasnt expecting this hidden road, I thought i have to go through the everyday grind of riding through polluted congested mumbai traffic. But, this 20 minutes ride is full of greenery, curves and fresh air ... and is more fun when you are on a bike (yeah! I have a bullet) ... and u get that flavour of riding through a typical village of India ... I am so glad something like this has been preserved till now ... its amazing!

Sinhagad Fort - We gained the fort, but lost the lion

Well, this trip wasn't planned, but it was a pleasant surprise this morning. I was on a very short trip in pune for some work, and my friend happen to have a farmhouse just near to the fort, and bingo! we were right up there in fraction of moments ...

Lets read a snippet straight from Wiki ...

One of the most famous battles for Sinhagad was fought to recapture the fort by Tanaji Malusare, a general of Shivaji in March 1670. A steep cliff leading to the fort was scaled with the help of a ghorpad, or a monitor lizard. Thereafter, there ensued fierce battles between Tanaji and his men, and the fortkeeper Udaybhan Rathod and his army. Tanaji lost his life, but his brother Suryaji took over and captured Kondana.Upon hearing of Tanaji's death, Shivaji expressed his remorse with the words: "Gad aala pan sinha gela" - "We gained the fort, but lost the lion". In honor of Tanaji's death, the fort was renamed as Sinhagad. A bust of Tanaji has been established on the fort in memory of his contribution to the battle.

How to get there?
If you are coming from Bombay Expressway, a small service lane goes towards the left soon after the expressway toll ends, come till national road (a highway) from there there is another highway which goes towards Bangalore, you need to drive appx 20KM to come to a junction where you will see a church on the left hand side, on right hand side you will spot some shops, i.e., cafe coffee day / spencers etc., other land marks are a 'More' store on the left, Lavasa office, Cipla Foundation where you take the right turn under a bridge. This junctionis known as Diary Phata, from there you get onto Sinhagad road that leads you to khadakvasla village and lake, keep driving till you get to the main gate of DIAT where you take a right along the lake again till you reach Donge Village from where you can straight drive till Sinhagad Fort.

You can trek up the fort from here---this takes between 45 mins and an hour and a half uphill and between 30 mins and an hour downhill, depending on your physical condition. There are lime juice(limbu paani) and buttermilk(chaas) stalls along the route. It makes sense to carry a bottle of water or two. Be warned that the route is slippery in the rainy season.

For those who do not want to trek up, you can get off the bus at Golewadi, a stop prior to Sinhagad, and take a Jeep from here to the hill top (and back). Jeeps charge Rs.30-35 per person. Jeep drivers wait till they have collected around 6-10 people. The roads are steep and the ride takes 20-25 mins.

Another popular option is drive/ride your own car or two wheeler to the hill top-the roads are steep.

There is one a very straight road to the destination i.e., memorial (Samadhi) of Tanaji Malusare, most of the people take this straight road. But the straight road is fraction of the experience which you will get from the alternative roads which goes either from right side of the fort or left side of the fort, we took right turn (literally it was the RIGHT TURN), which lead to a visual treat for us.

How wonderful it is to know different countries culture, their living, thought process, lifestyle etc. Thanks to the student exchange program of my MBA, I had a chance to take some German friends out. While I was looking at the tires as a survival kit, my friend Harald told me that these are not for floating and just mere a protection for the boat for when it hits other boats or the wall, and the rope is good for nothing. By then it was started getting dark, so if the boat would have drowned, which was not very sophisticated looking with woods making all sorts of noises, we would have had to swim the whole night to survive .... luckily by then storm had settled to hear this sort of knowledgeable insights :)
